Live blogging from Ignite Phoenix
Tonight is Ignite Phoenix #3 hosted at the Tempe Center for the Arts. For those who don’t know what Ignite Phoenix is all about: “Ignite Phoenix is an information exchange aimed at fostering and inspiring Phoenix’s creative community. Presenters get 5 minutes and 20 slides to talk about anything they are passionate about. Send in your presentation or just show up and have a fun time.” If you’re in town there is still plenty of time to RSVP to the event either via the Facebook Event or at Upcoming. Don’t forget to join Ignite Phoenix’s Facebook group and LinkedIn Group. I expect there will be quite a bit of useful information and networking going on at this event.
Below I’ll be sharing the event live here and also via my twitter. Feel free to refresh the page as much as you would like It’ll be updated as much as possible through out the evening.
Update: The videos are now online http://ignitephoenix.blip.tv/ go check them all out.

5:14 – I arrived at TCA the event doesn’t start until 6
More after the fold…
5:34 – great view of Tempe town lake
6:03 – it’s starting to fill up. Let’s get this show on the road.
6:24 – here we go. Tempe tech counselor follows the “the wireless doesn’t work” guy
6:29 – what is ignite presentation
6:35 – first presentation “toilet training – a study of connectivity in history”. Interesting connection between toilets and science.
6:41 – presentation 2: “web comics: off the newsprint onto the Internet”. A great history of web comics and a lot of great examples. I gotta look up Garfield minus Garfield
6:46 – presentation 3 “how open source bio fuels will change phoenix and the world” great benefits economically and environmentally. AZ is a big place for Algae bio fuels. http://desertbiofuels.org/
6:52 – presentation 4 “floating bones 102: rules for loosely-coupled structures”
- presentation 5 “nothing defines humans better than their willingness to do irrational things in the pursuit of phenomenally unlikely payoffs”. Besides the long title it’s about how people are suckered into paying more and social norms. Are things overvalued? People are easily distracted. The power of price, just because it costs more doesn’t mean it’s better.
7:02 – presentation 6 “journalism’s implosion: what’s next” great presentation on what’s next for media 3.0 and how the news will change in the future. Collaborators becoming contributors. Journalism innovation is inexpensive.
7:09 – presentation 7 “the eyes have it: eyes as a window to cognition”
7:13 – presentation 8 “the art of enjoying food”. Oh I’m hungry. Learn da new foods skillz d00d.
7:18 – presentation 9 “big distance”. Distance in perspective. From 4.2 light years to the closest star to the size of DNA.
7:23 – break
8:00 – and we’re back and a word from the sponsor.
Ugh damn wordpress iPhone app crashes and I lose what I wrote!
After event update: So unfortunately I lost a couple of presentations worth of blog post because the Wordpress iPhone application crashed mid image upload, I decided it was too late to salvage the rest of the presentations. But I’m sure they will haven all of them posted on the website some time.Other than that the rest of the event was pretty amazing. Everyone who presented did a great job, learned a lot of stuff! I can’t wait for the next Ignite Phoenix June 9th, it’ll definitely be in a larger venue and just as exciting. So thanks to the 1 or 2 of you who followed the event live on here and sorry about the second half, you should have been there in person.
